I'm new to running my own printing startup and I'm currently wrestling with binding solutions for a new product. I need to find a way to bind books with a hard cover, but I'm also really keen on incorporating some sort of a lay-flatting technique as a potential client inquired about. I'm not necessarily looking for the completely flat-as-a-table lay-flat you see in some of the newer photo albums, but more along the lines of a book where the text block is bound to a cloth and not directly to the spine. I just need it to open more easily and stay open without constant pressure. I'm trying to keep the equipment costs for binding under $2500 because I need to invest in other printers. Does anyone have experience with affordable hardcover binding solutions that also offer that good lay-flatter characteristic? I'm open to exploring other options, including DIY approaches if they can produce a professional-looking result!
