better to buy or make book binding cloth

been rebinding books for a while now but book binding cloth is getting pricey i usually get a brand off amazon for about 20 bucks but that only covers 2 books was about to start a big project and realized id be spending over 100 just on cloth seen some etsy sellers with cheaper options around 9 per yard but idk if i trust them anymore so whats the move here do most people buy or make their own book binding cloth and if buying where do you get it from

If you're going through a lot of book cloth, maybe making your own might be worth looking into. A lot of people use muslin or cotton fabric with heat-activated adhesive or wheat paste to create their own. It's more work, but way cheaper in the long run. Also, check out TALAS or Hollander's for bulk options; they can be pricey but have quality stuff.

you know you can do book binding with almost any fabrics, right? even unused fabrics or old clothing you have. this will reduce a lot of the costs, you can even do it at zero cost!

If you see this as a long term thing, it would be best to make. This has been a hobby of mine for years now and find it very much cost effective to just make my own. Best thing about it is you have full control with the design and all.

yeah the cost kinda add up fast. 20 dollars for 2 books is a lot! try diy if you can. muslin or cotton with heatnbond will definitely make it. might be cheap but i assure you it works great!

Agree with this. If you're not picky, just get from your old pile of clothes and you'll be happy

This is super helpful, thank you! I've been eyeing some cotton prints and wondering if they'd work well for book cloth.

Quick question though, when using wheat paste, how do you keep the fabric from wrinkling or warping as it dries? And is there a big difference between using muslin vs. quilting cotton for durability?
